Are OpenRouter’s free models really free?
Yes, they cost $0 per token, but they are rate-limited, and some free endpoints may log prompts or use them for training. Check each model’s provider policy on OpenRouter before sending anything private.
What are the rate limits on free models?
OpenRouter sets per-minute and per-day request limits on free variants, and raises the daily limit for accounts that have bought credits. The exact numbers change; see OpenRouter’s documentation for the current limits.
How do I use a free model?
Use the model id with the :free suffix (for example vendor/model:free) in your OpenRouter request.
